Denickelification See Corrosion.

Deoxidized A term applied to any metal or alloy to indicate that it has been treated to remove oxygen. It is specifically applied to copper and refers to removal of oxygen by means of phosphorus or other strong deoxidizing agents.

Deoxidized Coppers (Copper Nos. 120, 121, 122, 123 and 145) See Copper, Phosphorus Deoxidized Copper.

Die Scalping or Die Shaving Drawing through a sharp edged die to remove the surface layer.

Die Scratch A longitudinal scratch on the surface of any drawn product resulting from the use of a roughened die or from the drag of a foreign particle between die and product.

Dip Solution Any chemical solution used to produce a specific color or finish on copper or copper alloys. See also Pickle.

(1) Bright Dip
— A dip used to give a bright surface to brasses. A commonly used dip consists of 2 gal. of sulfuric acid, 1 gal. of nitric acid, ˝ fl. oz. of hydrochloric acid and 1-2 qts. of water.
(2) Matte Dip — A dip composed of 2 parts by volume of sulfuric acid to l part by volume of nitric acid and saturated with zinc oxide or sulfate. It is used to obtain a matte or dull finish on metals.
(3) Scale or Fire-Off Dip — A dip used to remove all surface oxidation prior to the application of a bright dip. A common formula is equal parts by volume of nitric acid and water.

For coloring and other chemical solutions, see CDA publications “Colored Finishes for Copper and Brass,” and “Standard Color-Controlled Copper Alloys with Protective Coatings for Automotive Applications.”

Disc See Circle.

Dish The transverse departure of the concave surface from a straight line from edge to edge. See Figure 13.
Figure 13

Double Layer Flat Coil See Coil.

Drainage Tube, (Copper) See Tube, Copper Drainage Tube, DWV.

Drawing (1) The process of pulling flat products, rod wire, tube, shapes, etc., through a die. This effects a reduction in size or change in shape of the cross-section and hardens the metal. (2) The process of making articles in a press from blanks cut from flat products in which the gage is reduced by pushing the metal between a punch and die to develop the side walls of the part.

Drawn Edges See Finished Edges.

Drawn Finish See Finish.

Drawn Bar, Drawn Rod, Drawn Shape, Drawn Tube, Drawn Wire Stock brought to final dimensions by cold drawing through a die, regardless of temper or prior operations.

Drifting The piercing of a hole and turning up a collar or flange, on sheet, strip, or articles made therefrom.

Driving Band Blank See Rotating Band Blank.

Dry Rolled Finish (Bright Rolled Finish) See Finish.

Ductility The property of a metal that permits permanent deformation before fracture by stress in tension.

Duplex Tube See Tube, Bimetal.

E

Earing A wavy projection in a regular geometric pattern on the rim of drawn cups formed in the course of deep drawing, as a result of directional properties or anisotropy of the sheet.

Edge Contours See Finished Edges.

Edgewise Curvature The lateral departure of the edge from a straight line, which may be unidirectional or reversing; in the latter case, sometimes called snaky.

Electrolytic Tough Pitch Copper (Copper No. 110) See Copper.

Elongation The permanent extension of a specimen which has been stretched to rupture in a tension test. The percentage elongation is an indication of ductility. See Test, Tension.

Embossed Strip A rolled flat product, one or both surfaces of which have been embossed by means of rolling with a design in relief regularly repeated in a longitudinal direction.

Embossed Tube See Tube.

Embossing The ornamenting of metalwork with raised surfaces.

Endurance Test See Tests.

Engraver’s Brass (Copper Alloy Nos. 342 and 356) See Copper Alloy.

Equivalent Round The equivalent round of a tube other than round is the circular tube which has the same wall thickness as the average wall thickness of the tube under consideration and the same weight per linear foot.

Erichsen Test See Tests, Cup.

Erosion See Corrosion.

Etching (1) As applied to mill products and forgings, an attack by corrosive media resulting in pitting, mealiness or outline of structural details of the metal. (2) In metallography, the process of revealing structural details by the preferential attack of reagents on a metal surface.

Etching Brass See Copper Alloy.

Extruded bar, rod, shape, tube, and wire Stock brought to final dimensions by extrusion. Also see As Extruded

Extrusion, Hot The process of shaping metal into a chosen Continuous form by forcing it from a closed container through a die of appropriate shape. See As-Extruded.

Extrusion Pipe A defect that occurs during extrusion and is located internally at the back end of the extruded piece. This defect is removed by cropping off the back end.
